Competition Updates

We had a total of 49 entries in our January competition! Thanks to there being so many it took me a while get them prepped for the web and uploaded but they are all online now on our Competition Images page. The results from the January competition as well as all of the 2010 results are available on our Competition Results page.

The new rules are all updated including a summary that puts things in a nutshell for those who aren’t into reading every detail right away. You can view all the info on our Competition Rules page.

There have also been a few changes and updates made on our Competition Info page.

Important Updates

We had a lot of great submissions for the January competition. Thanks to everyone who participated! To view the results check out our Competition Results page. I will be posting the images from the competition as soon as I receive copies of the digital submissions from Chris Volf.

Based on the number of submissions and the amount of time required to judge and critique them I am making an executive decision regarding the President’s Challenge for February. I will be extending the deadline by one week in order to allow enough time on competition night for the regular judging to take place. We will have the President’s Challenge on technical night and plan the technical presentation to allow 30 minutes at the end for the event.

As for the January technical presentation coming up this Friday we have 2 things on the schedule. Don Smith will be sharing some information with us and I will be giving a presentation covering a few topics as well. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there!

I have had an insanely busy shooting and teaching schedule lately and have gotten a bit behind on a few items but prior to next month’s meetings I do plan on making competition entry forms and membership applications available here on the website for you to download and print. I will also be updating the Competition Info page to reflect the changes being implemented for the 2011 competitive season.

Time for Some Changes

It’s a new year and there is certainly a lot of new things happening. First let me apologize for being a bit slow with web updates at the moment. I am going through the busiest month I have ever had in my photography career right now. I actually haven’t had a single day off yet this year so please bear with me right now.

As you may know every year in January the club has graduated a few “A” level photographers to “AA” status. In the past the rankings were strictly subjective without any actual standard being applied. We are changing that now. Just as in any other competitive environment, the competitors will ranked based on their stats. Since there are monetary prizes available to members who compete the board of directors decided that this is a more fair method than had been used in the past. Since the old system was based simply on total points members could simply enter a lot of images and accumulate a winning total even if the overall quality of the submissions was low. Rankings and winners in each category will now be based on the overall quality of work submitted.

In addition, there is now a participation requirement to be eligible for a prize at the end of the year. This is to prevent someone from only submitting a few good images and then coasting with a high average. The requirement is to submit work in at least 4 separate competitions out of the 11 we hold annually. This requirement is only for those members who wish to be eligible for a monetary prize. Members who are non-competitive may still submit in less than 4 competitions for the purpose of sharing work with the club and/or getting a critique from the judges.

Rankings and prizes will be based on a numeric value which for lack of a better name right now is being referred to as the “AQS – Average Quality of Submissions.” Your AQS is simply the number of points you accumulate based on whether images receive an award, an honorable mention, or a merit point divided by the total number of images submitted. Competitive members with an AQS of 4.5 or higher will be ranked as “AA” for scoring purposes and those with a lower AQS will have an “A” ranking.

For our 2011 competitive season members who are “A” ranked may move up to “AA” once they have met the participation requirement and their AQS is 4.5 or higher. Members who ended the 2010 season with a “AA” ranking will be grandfathered in for the 2011 season and will not be lowered to “A” ranking during this season but will lowered at the start of 2012 if their AQS is below the required level at the end of 2011. The only exception applies to those members who ended 2010 at “A” level and were just promoted to “AA” level for 2011. This is the list of members who have just been promoted and are fully subject to the new rules:
Oehl, Georg
Parrish, Robert OP
Poegel, Donna
Robinson, Leon
Volf, Chris
Livingston, Rob
Boyette, Jim
Edwards, Kara
Poynor, Ray
Gehres, Diane

AQS rankings will be not be posted for any member in 2011 until they have met the participation requirement. Any member that does not meet the participation requirement for the year will simply be considered as non-competitive and will not be eligible for prizes. Non-competetive members will be scored on the “A” scale for any images that they do submit and will begin the 2012 season with an “A” ranking.

Dominant Color Is This Month’s Theme

Competition night is Friday, January 21st. As always the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00 pm. Remember if you have images to submit you must be there by 6:30 to complete the submission process in advance of the meeting.

Also note on your calendar that the Saturday video series will take place this month on the 15th at 10:00 am. The presentation will be on Richard Koci Hernandez, Multimedia Journalist.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events!

Pics From the Holiday Party Meeting

Thanks to all who came out on Friday night. The food and drinks were great! The push-pin print show was fun and it was so nice to see folks gathering around the display, admiring and discussing the prints throughout the evening. The overall winners for competition points in 2010 were announced as well – congratulations to winners:

Class AA

  1. Mike Hayes
  2. Bill Gehres
  3. Doris Bowling

Class A

  1. Diane Gehres
  2. Diana Aichner
  3. Fang Shen

While on the subject I also want to recognize Victoria Drum for having the single highest scoring image of the year (32) during our Emulate the Masters competition.

The next scheduled meeting will take place on January 21st at 7:00 pm. It’s the first competition night of the new year and the subject is dominant color. New members who want to find out the details of how our photo competition works can check out the information here.

Don’t forget to work on entries for the President’s Challenge in February that will take place in addition to our regularly scheduled competition (travel). Details can be found about halfway down on the Competition Info page.

Holiday Party Meeting Update

It’s getting close to the meeting date! Remember to bring a print to hang. Loose prints are fine – no holes will be put in your prints. If you have an idea about what you will bringing – food, snacks, drinks, etc, please use this link http://tinyurl.com/2czl4u6 to get my email address and send me a quick note. Myself and a few other directors will wait to see if it appears as though we are coming up short on any items and we will fill in the gaps. The club will be providing tableware, cups, ice, etc. If you will be attending the Saturday Video Series you can let me know then if you choose. – Jim
