Friday, August 26 Meeting

Remember that the Friday night meeting will take place on location, not at tRg studios. We will meet at 7 pm and shoot at Curtis Hixon Park in downtown Tampa. The address of the park is 600 N. Ashley Dr. Tampa, FL 33602.

Street parking north of Kennedy Blvd. is free after 6 pm. If you park on the street and are unsure about the enforcement hours go to the nearest parking payment kiosk and enter your parking space number. The kiosk will inform you of the hours of enforcement for your space.

It is recommended that you bring a tripod if you have one.

Important Updates

Please be aware that effective at our next competition meeting we will be enforcing a cutoff time for entries. We have been receiving large numbers of entries for competition and many of the submissions are arriving at the last minute. This is causing the meetings to start late and run long. From now on entries must be at the submission table or the projector with all paperwork completed no later than 6:45 pm on competition night. If you have a digital submission you can email the file to me in advance if you wish. That will help speed up the process of getting digital files loaded into the computer ahead of the start of the meeting. Make sure that  you drop your paperwork off on time though. Hand delivered prints, digital files, or paperwork arriving after 6:45  pm will not be entered into competition. Use this link to access my email: http://tinyurl.com/2czl4u6

For your convenience you can download a printable copy of the entry form here: http://www.jrsphotos.com/tbcc/TBCC_ENTRY_FORM.pdf

We have member badges for you to pick up at the start of meetings now. Please leave your badge when you go home. If you take it with you and lose it there will be a $5 replacement fee.

We are now in the planning stages for our annual holiday party. We have chosen 3 possible dates to have the party and we are allowing members to vote for the date. Only one vote is allowed from each paid member. You can access the voting form here: Holiday Party Vote

Macro Photography Tips, Techniques, and Gear

Since our next competition subject is macro photography I will be hosting a get-together to cover all sorts of methods, techniques, and gear that you can use to create macro photos. You might be surprised to find out that you don’t necessarily need specialized equipment to come up with some interesting macro photos.

The Spaghetti Warehouse is located at 1911 N 13th St, Tampa, FL 33605

We will meet at the Spaghetti Warehouse in Ybor City on Tuesday night, August 2nd, at 7:00 p.m. You can get some dinner to eat while you take in the presentation. Please leave a reply below if you wish to attend so that I can give the restaurant an idea of how many people to expect that evening.

Let me clarify a few things. It’s not a workshop, I’m giving a presentation for the benefit of any of our members who may need some guidance with respect to equipment and techniques that can be used to take macro photos for our next competition. I will give my presentation at 7:00 pm. People can arrive anytime up until then and may order food if they wish and can eat while watching the presentation if they want to. If anyone wishes to do any shooting before or after they are on their own and welcome to do so.

Get Ready For Your Close-Up!

At tomorrow night’s meeting  we will taking headshots and putting ID badges together for members.

The July competition results have been posted and are available to view here: http://www.jrsphotos.com/tbcc/TBCC-July.pdf

We had 75 images entered in July, possibly a record for the club. I am working on the images for posting in our gallery and hope to have them up by next week. I will announce it here when they are up.

The August competition subject is macro. Very soon I will try to schedule and announce a macro tips and techniques session for any members who would like some technical insight on this fascinating genre of photography.

Meeting Update

Thursday April 14th is the next scheduled Director’s work night.

Friday night the 15th is competition night, the topic is architecture. Make sure you bring your prints and files in early enough to get them prepped for the judging. If you are bringing digital files please try and have them alone on a thumb drive or at least in their own folder named TBCC. You can help out the organization process by naming the files with the image title preceded with the letter “G” or “A” so that it can be properly placed as either general or assigned. Examples:

Important Updates

We had a lot of great submissions for the January competition. Thanks to everyone who participated! To view the results check out our Competition Results page. I will be posting the images from the competition as soon as I receive copies of the digital submissions from Chris Volf.

Based on the number of submissions and the amount of time required to judge and critique them I am making an executive decision regarding the President’s Challenge for February. I will be extending the deadline by one week in order to allow enough time on competition night for the regular judging to take place. We will have the President’s Challenge on technical night and plan the technical presentation to allow 30 minutes at the end for the event.

As for the January technical presentation coming up this Friday we have 2 things on the schedule. Don Smith will be sharing some information with us and I will be giving a presentation covering a few topics as well. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there!

I have had an insanely busy shooting and teaching schedule lately and have gotten a bit behind on a few items but prior to next month’s meetings I do plan on making competition entry forms and membership applications available here on the website for you to download and print. I will also be updating the Competition Info page to reflect the changes being implemented for the 2011 competitive season.

Dominant Color Is This Month’s Theme

Competition night is Friday, January 21st. As always the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00 pm. Remember if you have images to submit you must be there by 6:30 to complete the submission process in advance of the meeting.

Also note on your calendar that the Saturday video series will take place this month on the 15th at 10:00 am. The presentation will be on Richard Koci Hernandez, Multimedia Journalist.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events!

The overall winners for competition points in 2010 were announced as well – congratulations to winners:

Class AA

  1. Mike Hayes
  2. Bill Gehres
  3. Doris Bowling

Class A

  1. Diane Gehres
  2. Diana Aichner
  3. Fang Shen

While on the subject I also want to recognize Victoria Drum for having the single highest scoring image of the year (32) during our Emulate the Masters competition.

The next scheduled meeting will take place on January 21st at 7:00 pm. It’s the first competition night of the new year and the subject is dominant color. New members who want to find out the details of how our photo competition works can check out the information here.

Don’t forget to work on entries for the President’s Challenge in February that will take place in addition to our regularly scheduled competition (travel). Details can be found about halfway down on the Competition Info page.

Holiday Party Meeting Update

It’s getting close to the meeting date! Remember to bring a print to hang. Loose prints are fine – no holes will be put in your prints. If you have an idea about what you will bringing – food, snacks, drinks, etc, please use this link http://tinyurl.com/2czl4u6 to get my email address and send me a quick note. Myself and a few other directors will wait to see if it appears as though we are coming up short on any items and we will fill in the gaps. The club will be providing tableware, cups, ice, etc. If you will be attending the Saturday Video Series you can let me know then if you choose. – Jim
