May Technical Night – Special Presentation – Photographing Stunning Vertoramas of Architectural Interiors – by Padma Inguva

Please join us for this special Zoom presentation on May 28, 2021 at 6:30pm.

Presentation Info

Photographing the interiors of these massive structures such as cathedrals, museums and churches present photographic problems not readily solved by current and popular photographic techniques. After considerable trials and errors and mentoring from world class Klaus Hermann, Padma Inguva refined several techniques to showcase the interiors of churches and cathedrals by capturing the entirety of the altar and ceiling in one image that normally could not be captured in one frame.

By embracing the technique of Vertoramas, Padma has been able to capture the beauty and magnificence of these incredible structures.

In simple terms, it’s a combination of the already known techniques of Panoramas and HDR photography. In even simpler terms, by stitching together vertical frames and incorporating HDR photography Padma has managed to present a realistic and complimentary view of an incredibly large structure in a single image. As a devotee of the “art form” of Vertoramas, Padma will present her work as well as discuss the workflow that she uses to process these images. The topics include HDR (High-Dynamic Range Imaging, Vertorama stitching as well as tone mapping).

Presenter Bio:

Padma Inguva’s passion for photography goes beyond her incredible love for photographing flowers. It extends and encompasses the architectural world and all its wonders which include photographing places of worship especially interiors. As a photographer and a student of Civil Engineering , she has managed to incorporate the two disciplines into an art form. Her appreciation of Neoclassical Architecture has led her to capture some of the magnificent religious structures in USA.

I have been fortunate to attend several of Padma’s online classes. She is an enthusiastic and dynamic instructor and she will keep you on your toes as she shows you her methods and techniques.

April Technical Night – Long Exposures and Double Exposures – by Robert, Lee & Lynn

Since two of our upcoming Competition Assignments are Long Exposures and Double Exposures, we will be going over these photographic techniques for our April 23, 2021 Technical Night!

Robert, Lee and Lynn will be tag teaming the discussion with their images and suggestions on how to make artistic creations of your own.

These techniques are a bit outside “normal” photography but they are great ways to get more creative and have a lot of fun with the equipment and software we all have! You can even do this with your phone camera!

Mark your Calendar for our Next Outdoor Adventure – Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Robinson Preserve in Bradenton, FL.

As a followup to our wonderful Photocamp in January we are getting together for a morning plus lunch outing at Robinson Preserve in Bradenton on April 25, 2021 at 9 AM.

PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST.

This is a terrific park with many photographic opportunities.

I made a visit to check it out and was blown away and, I only saw part of it! I carried my long lens for birds and my wide angle on the infrared converted camera for landscapes. There were some birds but I spent most of my time shooting landscapes.

**Woodpecker – I also saw many egrets, some raptors and other small birds.**

The Observation Tower was a fairly short walk from the main parking lot but it is several stories high. There are decks on the lower levels so you can see some of the salt marsh from the lower levels. From the top deck you can see the Skyway Bridge and get an overview of the entire preserve.

The salt marsh has a great variety of plant types and there are long boardwalks and many bridges going over the marsh and small streams that flow in and out of the bay.

I even tried a little ICM with my iPhone and the Slow Shutter Cam app!

I have booked Pavilion #1 (below) that is adjacent to the parking lot and main trailhead at the 1704 99th St NW, Bradenton, FL 34209 entrance. If anyone wants to just hang out there it will be a pleasant spot and it is screened in. Also, everyone please bring a picnic lunch for yourselves and we can enjoy each others company at lunchtime. We will have the pavilion until 5:30pm so if you want to stay past lunch you are welcome to!

We will meet at the pavilion at 9 AM EDT. I will have maps of the preserve so you can decide which of the many trails you want to checkout. There is a long paved trail and some unpaved but fairly smooth crushed shell trails. The trail to the Observation Tower is mostly crushed shell.

Be sure to bring insect repellant and fluids for hydration!

Tucked into the corner of northwest Bradenton, Robinson Preserve includes 679 acres of coastal grasslands, saltern, marsh, and mangrove habitat. These systems support a variety of rare wildlife, presenting careful observers with an opportunity to see roseate spoonbills, wood storks, white pelicans, bald eagles, and least terns in their natural environment. Sprouting up from the salty soil are a vast array of intriguing plants, including saltwort, glasswort, and succulent sea purslane.

Robinson Preserve offers visitors numerous ways to explore the coastal habitats. Scale the 40-foot tall observation tower for a view of four counties and five water bodies or check out the view from the camera in the Valentine House Visitor’s Center. Bike or roller blade on 2.5 miles of trail, and hikers can explore more than 5 miles of shell and coastal trails. For paddlers, Robinson Preserve’s 2.5 miles of blueways present a chance to navigate through mangrove tunnels, marshes, and more. The opportunities are endless.

February 2021 – Technical Night – Special Presentation by Eileen Sklon – Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)

Introduction

Have you ever unintentionally hit the shutter button while you were moving your camera? Maybe you deleted the image or maybe you had a masterpiece on your computer! Well, those unintentional movements are difficult to recreate but how about intentional camera movement (ICM)? Making this type image can be fun and get your creative juices going BUT it can be frustrating as well.

Our special guest speaker, Eileen Sklon, has taken ICM up to the level of fine art! Her impressionistic images give you the essence of the scene but also make you wonder what it is. Eileen will be giving us some tips and tricks for making your ICM images into masterpieces. She will talk about shooting technique (with both your camera & phone) and will touch on some post processing as well.

Eileen has been making Impressionistic images for many years. She enjoys the many different ways of making her images painterly and the thrill she gets shooting these kind of images. She really enjoys sharing this love with others and showing how to create Impressionistic images using your camera and mobile phone. Eileen is proud to be a member of the team of presenters for Jackie Kramer’s Workshops, in person and online. She has been a presenter for Phlorographers Unite Ashville, Denver and Gainsville, Macro Masters 1 & 2 Online and the upcoming Phlorography Online 21. Eileen has also presented at Photography and Art Clubs around Florida.

January 2021 Technical Night – Judging and Being Judged with Jim Sykes and Robert Rostick

For our first Technical Night of the new year on January 22, we have our own Jim Sykes and Robert Rostick doing a panel discussion about image judging.

You might ask, why judging, I’m not a pro? But getting insight into how a professional looks at your images not only will help you with judging, if you get that opportunity on a TBCC Competition Night, but it also makes you more cognizant of what judges are looking for and what is important to them. Always remembering that all of this is very subjective.

This insight will make you more comfortable when you are called upon to judge others’ images but more importantly, it should give you a new “set of eyes” when you are looking at and evaluating your own images for competition and exhibition.

So please join us at 6:30pm on Friday, January 22, for the pre-meeting social time and then at 7:00pm we will start the meeting.

September Technical Night – Special Presentation by Colleen Miniuk – Human Perception in Composition

Colleen’s Bio:

Colleen Miniuk is an ex-software engineer who fled Intel Corporation in 2007 to pursue a meaningful life as a full-time outdoor photographer, writer, publisher, instructor, and speaker. Her credits include National Geographic calendars, Arizona Highways, AAA Via, National Parks Traveler, On Landscape, and a broad variety of other publications. She has served three times as an Artist-in-Residence with Acadia National Park. She authored the award-winning guidebooks, Photographing Acadia National Park: The Essential Guide to When, Where, and How and Wild in Arizona: Photographing Arizona’s Wildflowers, A Guide to When, Where, & How (1^st and 2^nd editions) as well as the instructional ebook, Seeing the Light in Outdoor Photography (1^st and 2^nd editions). She also writes a weekly advice column called “Dear Bubbles.” Colleen leads photography workshops and all-women photography workshops (called “Sheography™”) through her own company, CMS Photography, as well as for numerous camera clubs, national-level organizations, conferences, and private clients.

Description of the Presentation:

Anyone who has spent even a little time dabbling in photography has likely heard about the many “rules” of composition. And the emphasis on such topic is for good reason, for how a photographer arranges the visual elements within the frame directly affects how viewers perceive his or her photograph. But oftentimes photographers spend much time forcing their scenes to fit the rules (which yields technically “perfect” but perhaps boring photographs) rather than arranging the subject matter based on emotional responses, meaning, and human perceptions.

Join outdoor photographer Colleen Miniuk for a different way to approach composition. This insightful and educational presentation goes beyond reviewing the predominant rules and shares how we can leverage the reasoning behind human perception to help elicit specific responses from our viewers. Hear how people respond to subject matter placement, visual weight, lines, light, color, and other elements of visual language to help us arrange our scenes to communicate more meaningful messages with our audiences.

Examples of her art:

In the early 1900s, Charles S. Russell and river-running legend Bert Loper set out to make a movie about their whitewater adventures on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. After the first of their two boats sank in Cataract Canyon, Loper stashed the second boat along the river, hiked out of the canyon, and built a third boat out of galvanized steel. The Ross Wheeler, he called it, named after a local. Loper and Russell had a falling out. Russell took the Ross Wheeler and started the trip over with a new crew. The second boat sank. Then a fourth did as well. That was enough for Russell to abandon the third boat, the Ross Wheeler, along the South Bass Trail. Over 100 years later, the boat still rests there, chained to the boulders above the high water mark.

Updated – August Technical Night- Special Presentation by Charles Needle – Impressionistic Photography: How to Use Your Camera (or Smartphone) as a Paintbrush

Due to a medical issue our August speaker, Rad Drew, will be postponed until a later date , October 23rd.

BUT Rad referred us to renown photographer, Charles Needle, so he will be doing his own presentation for us.

Presentation:

Unlock your creative potential and discover how to craft painterly photographs using nothing but your digital camera (or smartphone). Charles will describe the process of using long-exposure and multiple-exposure techniques to transform everyday scenes into unimaginable visual masterpieces. His program will be a nuts-and-bolts approach to learning techniques such as, Long-Exposure Pan/Tilt, “Multiple-Exposure Monet” (a technique Charles invented), Multiple-Exposure Rotate & Zoom, Soft-Glow Montage and Composite Montage. He will also explain how to use a free script in Photoshop to accomplish this same look, if your camera does not have built-in multiple-exposure capability. You’ll learn how to see in new ways and take your photography to an entirely new, mind-blowing level!

Charles’ Bio:

Charles Needle is an award-winning, Colorado-based fine art photographer, author, speaker and workshop leader with a unique eye for design and artistic interpretation. His popular “Art of Nature” creative macro workshops have attracted students nationwide.

In 2018, Charles earned an honorable mention in the Macro category of the 8th Annual International Mobile Photography Awards Contest. He was also a semi-finalist in the 2014 Nature’s Best Photography Winland Smith Rice International Awards photo contest.

In 2011, Charles was selected as a finalist, among 15,000 entries worldwide, in the International Garden Photographer of the Year photography contest, sponsored by The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (London, England). This exhibition traveled throughout the United Kingdom.
